Var Energi ASA Expands Stake in Ekofisk PPF Project
Var Energi ASA (OSE: VAR) has notably increased its stake in the Ekofisk PPF project by acquiring TotalEnergies’ share, thereby boosting its ownership in license PL018F from 12.4% to 52.3% on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. This strategic move is aimed at revitalizing the Greater Ekofisk Area, which involves the development of four new subsea templates and 11 production wells that will connect to the Ekofisk Field Center. The IndexBox platform suggests that by employing state-of-the-art horizontal well and completion technologies, this initiative is projected to tap into substantially higher recoverable resources while maintaining low operational expenses. The acquisition is expected to add around 38 million barrels of oil equivalent to Var Energi’s net proved plus probable reserves. A final investment decision is expected to be made in the fourth quarter of 2025, with production anticipated to commence in late 2028.
CEO Nick Walker expressed that this acquisition aligns with their strategy to sustain production levels between 350,000 and 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) through to 2030, while also reinforcing their hub strategy within the North Sea. Following this transaction, the partners in license PL018F will consist of ConocoPhillips (35.1%, operator), Var Energi (52.3%), DNO ASA (7.6%), and Petoro (5%).
The Ekofisk field, first discovered in 1969, holds the distinction of being the inaugural field to go into production in the Norwegian North Sea, continuing to serve as a vital production center. As output from older wells declines, redevelopment projects like the PPF are essential for maximizing resource recovery and extending the operational life of established assets. Var Energi’s expanded interest not only fosters growth but also strategically positions the company to enhance its presence in one of Norway’s key offshore hubs.
